Is it better to keep a safe at home or to rent a private safe deposit box?
The answer depends on the amount and on your insurance. On the home side, buying an EN 1143-1 class I certified safe runs between 1,243 and 7,478 euros excl. VAT depending on size (catalogue of a professional distributor), plus installation, anchoring and a possible yearly insurance surcharge. On the rental side, the Dottignies (Mouscron) site applies a fixed yearly price, payable in advance, depending on the format.
Two logics compete: keeping your valuables at home in a certified safe, or entrusting them to a professional vault. The answer depends on the amount and on your insurance. Here is the full duel, figures included.
Home or rented: the duel in seven criteria
Same criteria, same scoring: the green dot marks a strength, amber a caveat, red a real limit. Every figure is sourced at the bottom of the page.

Security: what do the burglary figures say?
The Belgian federal police publish yearly home burglary statistics by zone and municipality: in 2025, Belgium recorded about 3 home burglaries per 1,000 inhabitants (BIPOL figures). A domestic safe deters an opportunist, not a determined team: a light or poorly anchored model can be carried away whole, and a present occupant can be forced to open it, as the RTBF report on safe deposit boxes recalls.
The European standard EN 1143-1 grades safe resistance after laboratory testing: class 0 corresponds, as an indication, to 7,000 euros in cash and 14,000 euros in valuables being insurable (grid from a Belgian installer), with higher classes going well beyond. The insurer sets the final cap and often requires anchoring to floor or wall. By contrast, a professional facility concentrates the defence: INCERT grade 3 certification for the vault, time lock, facial recognition for access to the reception area, day and night surveillance, and a police station 100 metres away in Dottignies (Mouscron).
Insurance: the real weak point of the home safe?
Belgian policy conditions are explicit. At AXA, all jewellery together is capped at 7,700 euros and all valuables at 275 euros. Belfius limits jewellery to 10,000 euros and valuables to 2,500 euros. Baloise goes up to 5,500 euros for valuables and to 15 percent of the insured furniture for jewellery, with a maximum of 23,500 euros (37,500 euros with the priciest option). These caps sometimes assume a certified, anchored safe; beyond them, a specific endorsement and an annual surcharge are needed.
In a rented box, insurance depends on the chosen formula: the numbered formula of the Dottignies (Mouscron) site is insured up to 10 million euros. The question to put to your insurer and to the operator alike is the same: what amount is actually covered, under what conditions, and how do you prove it in a claim.
Cost: one-off purchase against annual rent?
On the home side, buying an EN 1143-1 class I certified safe runs between 1,243 and 7,478 euros excl. VAT depending on size (catalogue of a professional distributor), plus installation, anchoring and a possible yearly insurance surcharge. A non-certified strongbox costs less upfront, but it usually opens no right to stronger compensation and is easier to carry away.
On the rental side, the Dottignies (Mouscron) site applies a fixed yearly price, payable in advance, depending on the format.
Access, privacy and real-world use?
When renting, visits follow the site's opening grid, six days a week in Dottignies (Mouscron), without appointment, with the access card, the key and the personal code; a privacy booth out of camera sight lets the renter handle valuables unobserved, and only the renter and any appointed agent know what the box holds. Access, visits and admitted items are detailed on the official safe deposit box rental page.
When does home storage remain the right choice?
