Which solution should you choose to store your valuables outside a bank?
No single solution suits everyone: the right choice depends on the amount to protect, on your priority (cost, security, access, privacy) and on your tolerance to banking risk. No amount designates a solution by itself: weigh value, written insurance, access, cost and concentration. The private vault outside banks of Gold & Silver Company in Dottignies (Mouscron), with no bank account required, combines a certified vault with rental outside the banking system.
Which solution fits your need?
Two questions place your scenario: the amount to protect, then your priority between cost, security, access, privacy and liquidity. The proposed amounts are indicative scenarios, not prescriptions.
Each solution, pros and cons
Here is the honest reading, option by option, including the limits of the private vault.
Home safe
For the home versus rented box duel, see the dedicated comparison.
Bank safe deposit box
The network is shrinking: ING has accepted no new requests since January 2022 and ended rental at the end of 2023, directing its customers to CitySafes (12 branches, from 9.95 euros a month). Banking risk and deposit guarantee detailed at sortirdesbanques.be.
Private vault outside banks
Renting from a specialised operator outside banks: INCERT grade 3 certified vault, fixed yearly price detailed in the box below, contract in twenty to thirty minutes, no bank account required; fixed location, and contents insurance depends on the chosen formula.
Free port (Switzerland)
For Switzerland versus Belgium, see the dedicated geographic comparison.
How to choose by amount
The choice does not follow from any universal threshold: compare the value to protect, the written cap of your insurance, the full cost, the frequency of access and the concentration risk. For a decision about your assets, ask for advice adapted to your situation. The scenario below is indicative, not prescriptive.
From 5,000 to 50,000 euros. In this scenario, the comparison bears on physical security and insurance: home policy caps against a certified vault, a fixed yearly price against branch conditions. The private vault outside banks in Dottignies (Mouscron), with no bank account required, belongs in that comparison; a bank box depends on what your branch still offers, ING having ended rental at the end of 2023. For the real cost of a box over ten years, see the calculator at coffrehorsbanque.com.
Whatever the amount, the comparison criteria stay the same: full cost, physical security, access, privacy, written insurance and the concentration of locations and forms.
Gold & Silver Company, in Dottignies (Mouscron)
In 2012, Gold & Silver Company opened the first private safe deposit rooms outside the banking system in Belgium. Access without a bank account: a valid ID card or passport is enough, all nationalities, individuals and professionals. The contract takes twenty to thirty minutes and access is immediate, free during opening hours, without appointment. Prices payable in advance: from 240 to 350 euros per year depending on the format, or 10 euros a month for numbered custody (secure shared area, insured up to 10 million euros; an identity document is shown at signup). Termination by registered letter with ten days' notice, any started year being due. Details on the official page.
